How to care for Kenyan baskets, beadwork & soapstone

Handmade pieces last for years with a little care. Here's how to look after the most common Kenyan crafts.

Care by material

  • Sisal baskets (kiondo). Keep dry, avoid constant direct sun, reshape with a light mist of water and air-dry. Condition leather straps occasionally. Explore →
  • Beaded jewelry. Store flat or hanging, keep away from perfume and swimming pools, and wipe with a dry cloth. Explore →
  • Kisii soapstone. Dust with a soft cloth. It's a soft stone, so avoid knocks. A little wax or oil restores the shine. Explore →
  • Wood carvings and kitchenware. Hand-wash, dry immediately and oil with food-safe oil every few months. Explore →
  • Leather bags and sandals. Condition a few times a year, dry naturally away from heat, and store stuffed with paper. Explore →
  • Kikoys, kangas and shukas. Cold wash, wash bright colours separately at first, and dry in the shade. Explore →
